Arkham City Red Robin Utility Belt

I was commissioned to make the Arkham City version of Red Robin’s utility belt. It was made of 3 and 5mm foam sheets. To get the curved edges and inner circle on the buckle I built up layers of foam in those shapes and then glued a thin, flat sheet of foam on top and stretched it over the shapes so they would show through. The belt was backed with polypropylene webbing and the pouches were attached using chicago screws and washers.

Owlman Gauntlets, Belt, and Leg Guards

I was commissioned to make a pair of Owlman gauntlets and leg guards as well as one of my new 52 bat belts with a custom Owlman buckle. I made paper templates first and then cut the shapes out of 3 and 5mm eva foam and glued them together with super glue. The leg guards are basically just wider, taller versions of the gauntlets. I glued the layers of the buckle together while holding a bend in the foam so that it would retain a curve after drying. Everything was hand painted with acrylic.

Damian Wayne Robin Belt/Gauntlets/Symbol

IMG_4297 (Small)

I was commissioned to make some costume pieces for a Damian Wayne Robin costume. The items were made out of flat layers of 3 and 5mm eva foam sheets, glued together with super glue and hand painted with acrylic paint. The belt pieces were glued onto a length of polypropylene webbing and fasten with velcro at the back.

1966 Batman Utility Belt

1edit2 (Medium) (Small)

I was commissioned to make the classic 66 bat belt. I made a template for the pouches and buckle and built them up from flat layers of eva foam. I first tried making the canisters out of eva as well but eventually decided to use 1/2″ pvc pipe for them instead. I had a hard time finding a yellow paint that covered the original color of the foam well, but eventually discovered the great Benjamin Moore Aura which not only has excellent hide but it also provides an incredibly smooth finish. It really made it look like the belt was made out of smooth vinyl fabric instead of foam. Aura can be a little tricky to use though because it dries so fast. Mix in some paint extender if needed to slow it down a bit. The buckle was painted with metallic acrylic. I glued on a length of polypropylene webbing to the back of the belt for durability and added velcro for fastening.

Flashpoint Batman Utility Belt

1 edit2 (Medium) (Small)

I was commissioned to make a Flashpoint Batman utility belt complete with gun holsters. I patterned the pouches, holsters, and buckle and put together a strap system of webbing for the holsters. I used chicago screws and washers to attach the holsters and pouches and then glued the webbing to the foam belt. It fastens at the back with a plastic buckle. The webbing and plastic hardware are from strapworks.com.

Wonder Woman Boot Toppers

1e (Medium) (Small)

I was commissioned to make a pair of Wonder Woman boot toppers. I first designed a paper template and then cut the shapes out of 3mm eva.  In order to make it look more three-dimensional I cut the bottom two pieces taller than needed and overlapped them with each previous layer- sort of dragon scale like. I glued the pieces onto a foam backer and smoothed the edges with a dremel after cutting it all out. It was then hand painted with metallic silver acrylic paint.
